The Men That Drive Me Places
Howard drives a minivan with
the cruise ships from Ft.Lauderdale
And its been that way since 1994
Does his business on a flip phone
with the most obnoxious ringtone
I didnt ask but
I can tell hes from New York
he spoke proudly of his daughter
and that this fall shed be in college
And that he always wished
hed gotten his degree
You can tell he came from nothing
built a future out of hustling
And somehow Im the one
you people pay to see
Oh isnt that just the way it goes
Youre dealt a good hand
and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
Im half the man
of the men who drive me places
Danny showed up early
fifteen minutes till five thirty
Making sure that
Id be on my morning flight
He said hed love to fix computers
but that he cant until hes fluent
So he spends his driving money
taking class at night
He wore a neatly ironed dress shirt
and he helps his kids with homework
And deep inside I couldnt help
but ask myself
Why that at night Im up on stage
everybody knows my name
While Dannys early
picking up somebody else
Oh isnt that just the way it goes
Youre dealt a good hand
and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
Im half the man
of the men that drive me places
now everythings not given
I work hard to make my living
But Ill give credit
where I think credits due
Maybe you got dealt a goodhand
Maybe you play it
the best that you can
But I dont know how far youd walk
without those cards
In Howard and Dannys working shoes
But thats just the way it goes
Youre dealt a good hand
and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
Im half the man
of the men that drive me places
