Early one mornin the sun was shinin,

I was layin in bed

Wondrin if shed changed at all

If her hair was still red.

Her folks they said our lives together

Sure was gonna be rough

They never did like mamas homemade dress

Papas bankbook wasnt big enough.

And i was standin on the side of the road

Rain fallin on my shoes
雨水滴落在鞋子上
Heading out for the east coast
打算去東海岸
Lord knows ive paid some dues gettin through,

She was married when we first met
她在我們相識之前就已結婚
Soon to be divorced
沒多久就離婚了
I helped her out of a jam, i guess,
我猜我幫她走出了困境
But i used a little too much force.
但又給她帶來了壓力
We drove that car as far as we could
我們開著車去了盡可能遠的遠方
Abandoned it out west
把一切麻煩留在身後
Split up on a dark sad night
在一個悲傷的黑夜我們分開了
Both agreeing it was best.

She turned around to look at me

As i was walkin away
在我邁步離開時
I heard her say over my shoulder,

I had a job in the great north woods

Working as a cook for a spell

But i never did like it all that much

And one day the ax just fell.
終於有一天被炒了魷魚
So i drifted down to new orleans
然後我啟程去了新奧爾良
Where i was lucky just to be employed
在那兒我又幸運地找了份工作
Workin for a while on a fishin boat
在漁船上乾了一陣
Right outside of delacroix.

But all the while i was alone
我一直孤身一人
The past was close behind,
過去已被我拋在腦後
I seen a lot of women
我見了很多女人
But she never escaped my mind, and i just grew

She was workin in a topless place

And i stopped in for a beer,

I just kept lookin at the side of her face

In the spotlight so clear.

And later on as the crowd thinned out

Is just about to do the same,

She was standing there in back of my chair

Said to me, dont i know your name? I muttered somethin underneath my breath,

She studied the lines on my face.

I must admit i felt a little uneasy

When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe

'i thought youd never say hello,' she said
“我覺得你從來不對人打招呼，”她說
'you look like the silent type.'
Then she opened up a book of poems
“你看起來那麼沉默。 ”然後她打開一本詩集
And handed it to me

Written by an italian poet

From the thirteenth century.

And every one of them words rang true

And glowed like burnin coal

I lived with them on montague street

In a basement down the stairs,

There was music in the cafes at night

And revolution in the air.

Then he started into dealing with slaves

And something inside of him died.

She had to sell everything she owned

And when finally the bottom fell out

I became withdrawn,

The only thing i knew how to do
